Art History Retrospect ~ University of Utah - MFA Show 1997
The Quasiac Garden
In my "artist statement" I tried to attach existentially inspired philosophical meaning about the relationship between chaos, man and nature. The committee didn't think I needed to say anything about the show and that the work spoke for itself.
What the heck it said is anyone's guess. Looking back now it seems like harmony trying to find it's way into a conflicted situation.
Technically, the biggest challenge was to create a strong, low shrink clay that would work with the steel. Although there were a few cracks in the bigger sculptures, I developed a very light, native-based, earthenware clay that I harvested from the quarry and mixed from scratch.
The rest was blissful blood, sweat, and tears.. not to mention no sleep and a very sore bod.. and worth every second of the experience. Can't wait to do it again...
